Katrina Vivian

Aesthetic Barrier

Franz Xavier Messerschmidt forced the aesthetic barrier and broke the boundaries of convention through his love of art, proportion of the human body and desire for truth.

Outrageous at the time, his sculptures portrayed artistic turmoil, passions of anger and frustration, and images of the grotesque and beauty of human emotions.

Arnulf Rainer claimed he wasn’t into the lineaments of grace, charm and normality. “Faces without strong emotions do not suit me”, he stated when discussing his over drawings of Messerschmidts character heads.

The same is true of where Katrina’s interest lie with her current work Trinity: the connection between the portrayal of the grotesque and the desire to re-work and reform an earlier piece of work through the medium of paint: to re-create that sense of strong emotions. Freeze in time the physical motor activity in the human face.
